The Emergency Medical Services community has said that homeland security begins with hometown security.

While we can never completely foolproof our environment, we can empower ourselves by knowing how to prepare for an attack, and getting involved as a volunteer. The following websites provide information on emergency preparation plans in your state and hometown. Use them as the first step in helping protect your family and hometown security.

1. State-by-State Disaster Help

Click your state on this government-sponsored interactive map to get specific information on your state's strategy for safeguarding citizens from terrorist attack, as well as region-specific disaster management news.

2. State Offices of Homeland Security Information

Click on your state's name, or scroll through the list of states to reach your state's office or division of homeland security, and for the name, address and phone number of your state's homeland security director or manager.

3. State Emergency Management Agencies

Scroll through this list for the address and contact information of your state's division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as well as links to every state's website.

4. The American Red Cross, State-by-State

The American Red Cross organization is one of the primary providers of emergency relief services, and offers volunteer opportunities. Click your state on the interactive map to find links to Red Cross chapters near you.

5. State-by-State List of Community Emergency Response Team Programs

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Programs train citizen volunteers in disaster response skills, empowering them to help themselves and those close to them when disaster strikes, and to support professional emergency response teams. Scroll through this state list to find a state, county or local CERT program near you. If you don't find one near you, or you are interested in starting a CERT program, let your local Emergency Management Agency know.

Government-sponsored Citizen Corps Councils brings together local leaders and businesses, first responders and volunteers at the state, tribal and local level to coordinate volunteer activities, and improve local disaster preparedness. Use this list to find out how to contact, by phone or email, your state's Council representative.
