Top 3 Ways We Can Affect War on Terror Policy

By Amy Zalman, Ph.D., About.com

If Americans want to have a say in how the war on terror is prosecuted, if at all, broad and deep shifts must begin to take place among us—the electorate—and among our elected officials. And we should have a say: at stake are our armed services, our tax dollars, the allocation of our financial and social resources, and ultimately, the role we hope the United States will have in world affairs long into the future.

We can affect what our elected leaders think. Here are ways to begin figuring out our own views, so we can let them know what kind of policy we'd like to see.

1. Learn to Assess Current War on Terror Policy

First, we need to become more adept at assessing current policy.

2. Learn More about Military Plans to Combat Terrorism

We have to become comfortable and familiar with the fact that military planning and policy is not the same as any given administration's policy.

3. Learn more about the Societies and Histories of Others

Deciding what kind of war on terror we want, or if we want one, means we also have to begin getting familiar and comfortable with the societies and politics of some areas we aren't used to.
