Nightclubs and American Consulate Targeted :
Three bombs were detonated at once, two around nightclubs in the Kuta district, and another near the US consulate in Denpasar. First, a small bomb exploded outside the US embassy, with minimal effect. Then, a suicide bomber inside a nightclub called Paddy's Bar, self-detonated. Within seconds, a car bomb exploded nearby, causing massive human and property damage.
Death Sentences for Jemaah Islamiyya Attackers:
The group responsible for the attack was Jemaah Islamiyah, a militant Islamist group with alleged links to Al Qaeda.
US Still Holds Hambali:
The presumed mastermind of the attack, Riduan Isamuddin, was arrested in August 2003 in a joint operation headed by the Thai police and the CIA. Isamuddin is known as Hambali. Hambali was probably transferred to a covert CIA prison (a practice made well known by scandals over extraordinary rendition) before his transfer to Guantanamo Bay, where he is still held.
