Terrorism Research Tip- -Use Different Sources to See Different Points of View

Once you have uncovered your news sources different editorial biases, or ownership, you can use these to find different points of view of the same event.

In Sri Lanka, for example, where the Sinhalese majority government is essentially at war with a Tamil minority that uses terrorist tactics, different news outlets report terrorism related news very differently.

The state-owned Daily News calls the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) a terrorist group in most reports and headlines. TamilNet, an online news service about Tamils, reports LTTE "resistance" rather than "terrorism." And Muslim sources, such as the Muslim Guardian online, report news of violence between the Sinhalese government and the Tamil militias from the point of view of the island's Muslim population.
